Key Message of SOS: ACT
Acknowledge that you are seeing signs of depression or suicide in yourself or a friend and that it is serious.
Let your friend know how much you Care about them and that you are concerned that they need help.
Tell a trusted adult that you are worried about yourself or a friend.
7th and 8th graders who returned their SOS parent consent forms will have an SOS Signs of Suicide lesson this week with a presenter from PreventSuicideWV. An RMS teacher and counselor will be present during each lesson. Those students will also complete a depression screening.
Students who did not return the form will remain in the classroom with their regular teacher and go over the basics of suicide prevention. They will not do a depression screening.
6th graders will not do SOS. They will discuss personal safety during a regular I Can lesson later this year. 6th graders will not complete a depression screening.
All students will be given the safety helplines: 1-800-273-TALK (8255) or text 741-741.
All students will also be given the opportunity to self-refer if they wish to talk to a counselor about themselves or a friend.
